Self-cleaning glass has a microscopic coating with a unique dual-action. The first stage of the cleaning process is “photocatalytic”. In this stage, the coating reacts with daylight to break down organic dirt. The second stage is “hydrophilic”. Here, instead of forming droplets, rainwater hits the glass and spreads evenly, running off in a “sheet” and taking the loosened dirt with it, also drying quickly once it has stopped raining, to produce a clear vision

Here are the products available:

Pilkington Activ clear and St. Gobain Bioclean clear

Both are clear Self Cleaning glass and clear in appearance, although the coating has a slight reflective surface when viewed from outside.  The coating is undetectable when viewed from inside of the property looking out

Pilkington Activ Blue

Self Cleaning glass with a blue tint.  The coating is visible from inside and out and has a higher visible reflective blue tint when viewed from outside the property looking in and also has heat reflective properties

St.Gobain Bioclean Coolite

Self Cleaning glass with a slight grey tint.  The coating is invisible from inside the property looking out but has a slight grey reflective appearance from outside looking in and has heat reflective properties

The Self Cleaning glass surface is enabled by Ultra Violet light which activates the self cleaning effect and   usually takes 1-4 weeks to enable the coating to commence it’s work from the installation date.  The coating usually retains enough UV to effect a Self Cleaning effect during the night and then will “re-charge” during daylight hours to continue the process

Considering that, the Self Cleaning glass will not work efficiently on elevations facing East and North owing to limited solar exposure and the fact, that in the United Kingdom, very little rain, if at all, falls on these elevations.  Also, Self Cleaning glass is only available as a float glass product and is not available on any other products such as printed obscure glasses

During dry conditions, the Self Cleaning glass surface will collect surface dirt which can be removed using conventional cleaning methods or merely wait for rainwater to continue the cleaning process

It all boils down to a U value, which is a measurement of Thermal Efficiency and is normally achieved by using different components within the manufacture of a double glazing unit.  The lower the U value, the better the insulation

Planitherm is a soft coated Low Emissivity glass which is slightly more energy efficient than Pilkington K glass but has to be processed using specific machinery that deletes about 12mm of the coating during the cutting process which allows the adhesion of the double glazing unit edge sealant to the actual glass surface, whereas Pilkington K glass does not require that process as the K coating will adhere as easily as regular float glass

Where these energy efficient double glazing units are installed to domestic or commercial elevations as far as the Sun is concerned, that is facing South and West, and East to a certain effect, these glass units readily allow Solar Energy to be transmitted to within the room that the glass is installed, then the efficiency of the glass units, in effect, capture the Solar Energy within that room, to be retained by the high energy efficient glass units, resulting in a warmer room environment
